We went ahead and started Kindergarten this week, as I had scheduled. I already know there are some things I probably really want to change, and I think I might really regret something I bought, but I don't want to get into all that in our first week. It's time to be positive!
For our first day of school we focused on posterity. I took a keepsake picture, wrote down my son's height and weight, and had my son sign his name on the same paper. It will be neat to compare all the same things at the end of Kindergarten.
Ah, Kindergarten! Such a milestone. I'm all nostalgic and weepy.
After completing our lessons for the first day we all went out to get a milkshake. I wanted to get some cute pictures of the kids getting milkshake all over themselves, but I forgot the camera.
The rest of the week didn't go as smoothly. Tuesday night my son came down with a serious cold. I cancelled school for Wednesday while my son wiped his nose all day. And coughed. And laid around looking pitiful. We went through our lessons on Thursday, but didn't manage them on Friday.
The Grapevine Bible Study has been going well. My son really likes drawing the pictures and I think it's helping him to learn the stories. He comes up with all kinds of questions for me later on in the day. During non-school time, he'll often draw parts of the stories in combination with other things he likes. (That makes for some interesting pictures.)
This summer break was fertile soil for my son's reading abilities. All summer long he's been reading everything around him: cereal boxes, elevator signs, commercials, road signs, etc., etc., etc. On our road trip to see Grandpa, he read the following sign in Denny's: Worst seat in the joint. Sit here and get 50 off your bill. (It said 50% - but he didn't know what to do with the % sign).
All of that reading has cemented my son's skills. He jumped right into Lesson 94 reading better than he did back in April when we had our last attempt at school.
As for the rest, I'm going to give it all another week, another perusual of the teacher's manuals, and another thought before I make any decisions.
I hope you had a great week, even if you haven't started the school year yet. And I hope next week is wonderful for you as well.
Pluggin' along,
Katrina
