Weekly Report, Week Five

GiraffeParis

We read a really neat book this week*. I had to get it on interlibrary loan, but the wait was worth it. The Giraffe that Walked to Paris is one delightful picture book. I can't believe I'd never heard of it before. I love the history presented in the story. I never knew that a giraffe was sent over to France from Egypt! It was very interesting to contemplate the complications involved in sending a Giraffe hundreds of miles away. The artwork is great. The factoid page at the end of the book satisfied my curiosity.

My daughter loved this book. She wanted me to read it every day and have Daddy read it every night for bedtime. After two reads, my son warmed up to the book considerably and started asking for it to be read every day too. He made sure to specifically ask me about the stuffed giraffe pictured on the informational page. (Boys!) My kids even talked me into making giraffe cookies ("Please, Mommy, please, please.")

But in an anti-climax that beats everything, my son did not want to look at the giraffes at the zoo.

[wide-eyed blinking]

You never can tell about that kid.

On another note, I am really sad that I cannot find this book anywhere. It went out of print long ago and the only copies around are used and selling for $80 each [glare]. If I see this book on the shelf at Goodwill I am so snagging a copy - even if it is falling apart! (Duct tape is my friend.)

----------------------------------

My decisions of last week seem to be playing out well. We did four good, full days of school this week, including a crafty art project. I have to tell you about that art project book sometime; I'm lovin' it.

*The book is one used in FIAR Volume 2, which is the only reason I sought it out. I'm using FIAR in our Kindergarten studies.
